If there was one thing Sofi had never been able to even pretend to be good at, it was being on time. Well, she could be on time for some things, official things, like school or work or so on. But if she had a club meeting or had to meet friends or anything of that sort, she appeared like clockwork five or ten minutes after the appointed time, blonde hair flying, frenzied apologies already spilling from her lips. She stubbornly swore it was not her fault that, clearly, the universe was against her. Either her keys hadn’t been where she left them, or the car in front of her was going ten miles under the speed limit, or she had left the iron on and had to go back. Something never failed to disturb her exit from home. So it was no surprise when she came bustling into the cute, little, hole in the wall café she and Cody frequented at quarter after one. Running her fingers through her tousled hair, she flashed a smile at the woman who went to greet her, motioning to the table where Cody sat.
The boy’s back was to her and he didn’t seem to have noticed her rather busy entrance. Suddenly much quieter, she moved quickly across the tiled floor. Coming up behind him, she covered his eyes with her pale hands, and whispered, “Boo,” in his ear.
Giggling, she dropped into the chair across from him with a dramatic huff, tossing her phone and keys on the table. Still a little flustered, hurried words tumbled out of her mouth. You always knew when Sofi got comfortable around you by the way she spoke. Around strangers or kids at school she didn’t know well, she was quiet, and her thoughts were always carefully worded. However, as her friends knew, she was more likely to just allow her jumbled thoughts to spill out uncensored. “You know, if you wanted to just agree that we originally agreed to meet at 1:15, I could say I was on time. So I’m going to pretend that you agreed that we agreed, and comment on the fact that I think I’m getting better at being on time.”
Finally settling back in her chair, Sofi let out a breath and calmed down a bit. Matt had woken up late and pushed her out of the bathroom, yelling he needed to take a shower right away if he was going to make it to the station on time. He really did have a gorgeous apartment, but the one bathroom thing was definitely a drawback. His interruption threw off her whole morning, and she’d been running fifteen minutes late all morning, much to her distress. This was the first time she’d finally relaxed all morning.

Cody placed the last grocery bag down on the kitchen table; he internally debated whether or not he should just stay a few minutes longer to help put everything away. He always helped his mother in anything she needed assistance with, but it was cutting close on time and she was insisting that he just head on out. “Are you sure?”, he asked for the third time, really wishing she would just let him stay and help, but she nodded and kissed him on the cheek. “Fiiine,” he chuckled a bit as he finally made his exit, he stuck his hand in his pocket and grabbed a hold of his cell phone as he walked towards the café in which he and Sofia had grown so accustomed to over the past few months. Sure, Cody worked at the local Starbuck’s but who wanted to hang out where they worked?
It was about one o’clock when Cody arrived, and he wasn’t surprised when he didn’t see Sofia, this was actually one of the days he was glad she was late. He walked over to the cashier and ordered their usual’s, which only took about seven minutes to whip up. Cody took both beverages and found an empty seat for two. He placed the beverages down and took his seat, back towards the door. He pulled out his cell phone and started up a game of Angry Birds as he waited. A few minutes and flying birds later, he felt a pair of hands covering his eyes and he couldn’t help but smile as he felt her breath on his ear. He knew exactly who it was and he was more than happy to finally see her. She had become one of his closest friends in such a small amount of time.
Cody gave a crooked smile as she spoke, “wow, you are getting better,” he played along. “I got you your favorite, by the way… you know, since I was … early,” he smiled a bit as he gave a light push to her beverage. “glad, you could finally pencil me into your busy schedule,” he teased playfully as he took a sip of his mocha Frappuccino. “What have you been up to anyways?” he asked casually, he loved hearing about her days.

Sofi giggled at his attempt to play along with her, blue eyes sparkling with laughter. “Aw, thanks for noticing.” Pulling the drink towards her, she arched one eyebrow, “Chai latte?” Taking a sip, she smiled up at him, “Mm, and you remembered I like vanilla the best. I knew there was a reason I kept you around. Remind me I owe you.”
She rolled her eyes, sticking out her tongue at him playfully, “If I weren’t as classy as I am, I would hit you. You know I’ll always make time for you. And I hope you remember that when you’re onstage with a VMA award and giving your thank you speech.” She reached across the table, swiping his drink and taking a sip, more to tease him than anything. “I haven’t been up to much. Lots of gym time and lots of AP work. Dreading the moment we have to go back to teenage hell, as always.” Grimacing, sadness lingered in her eyes for a few seconds as she thought back to last year. The thought of it still weighed down her chest. She’d spent the summer trying to block any thoughts of what happened, any reminders. She’d found out while she was by the pool with Cody. Numbly, she’d stared down at the picture on her phone, before tossing it on the deck and running into the house. The next day she’d finally come out of her room, carrying a box of old gifts, pictures, anything that was somehow related to Nate or her supposed best friend. She had their housekeeper tell any friends who came or called that she was out. She answered her mother’s “holier than thou” questions with empty words. It wasn’t until Matt got her out and into his apartment that she slowly joined the real world again, replacing her phone, going out, gradually regaining some of her lost vigor. But she still had yet to take the hardest step: going back to school. The closer it got, the more worried she was. But her worry only seemed to make it come faster.
Shaking her head, she automatically flashed a smile at Cody as reassurance that she was oh-so-okay. With a shake of her hand, she resumed speaking, “Psh, regardless, we must thus face the question: how are we going to make this an epic junior year?”

Cody nodded lightly when she said her drink of choice, he always remember little things like that. He smiled a bit and shook his head, “you don’t owe me anything, it’s what friends are for, right?”. He touched his glasses and readjusted them, his eyes never leaving the blonde across from him. He was really good at keeping eye contact, he thought it was rather rude when people didn’t give you their full attention when speaking to them. Plus, Cody really was interested in what everyone had to say. He believed that you could learn something new from every individual; you just have to give them that chance to teach you something. He had already learned a lot from Sofia, but he knew he wasn’t done. She was meant to be in his life and she was really fun to hang out with and talk to. In fact, she was very easy to talk to, which was one of his favorite things about her.
Cody made a shocked expression, “you’d hit me? And here I was, thinking you were as sweet as an innocent little puppy,” he shook his head, just messing around with her, it was quickly followed with a light laugh. He blushed a bit, “a VMA, really?” he shook his head, everyone kept mentioning that he was going to make it to the big leagues, but he had a doubt inside of him that told him otherwise. It wasn’t that he didn’t believe in himself, he just wasn’t sure if a small town boy like him could really get to the big music scene. He loved writing and playing his music, but would he ever get truly discovered? It scared him not knowing what the future had in store for him. Was he just wasting his time? No, it couldn’t be. This was his passion, damn it. And he wasn’t going to give it up, not without trying, at least. But he was more than thankful that his friends believed in him, especially when his doubts started to cloud his mind. “You’ll be one of the firsts I thank, I promise,” he smiled innocently.
“hey!” he laughed as she took ahold of his drink and took a sip, he didn’t mind it at all, “good though, right?” he smirked a little. “I still can’t believe you’re taking AP stuff, miss smarty pants,” he teased a bit, but then saw the expression in her face switch a bit. He reached over the table and touched her hand lightly, “if you need me, we can walk in together?” he said with a light smile. He knew how hard it must have seemed for her to go back to school after what had happened, “you can come over in the morning and I’ll make you breakfast and everything,” he added sweetly.
She had changed the subject, but he hoped she’d be okay and that she’d call him if needed. He was always there for his friends, especially when it came to her, he hated seeing such a sweet and amazing girl having to deal with stuff like that. “Hmm… i have nothing,” he laughed and shrugged, “I’m not really one that’s known to be ‘epic’… but uh…should we like join new clubs or something?” He really had no idea how to be epic or even do something crazy, but he was willing to do it if it’d keep Sofia’s spirits up. “Any ideas? I’m open to anything…” he said with a smile.

Sofi just shook her head, “Cody Heart, I am disappointed in you. Are you suggesting that I should use my friends to buy me fancy little café drinks? And here I was thinking our friendship was deeper than that. I would never expect this kind of shallow from you.” She met his eyes again, her lips edging into a half smile. The boy knew how to give his full attention, and he was probably the only one she made an effort in eye contact. She normally looked anywhere but the person in front of her. If she looked at the person she was talking to, she knew if they were likewise looking at her. And she didn’t like having people look at her; it made her self-conscious.
She gave him a mischievous grin, “Hey, I am that sweet. But even puppies bite.” Sof, took another sip of her cold drink, leaning forward to rest her cheek on the palm of her hand, tilting her head as she listened to him. “Of course, a VMA and more. You really do have it, Cody. You’re amazing, and you put your heart into every word you sing. If you want to make it, you will. Producers will be falling all over you.” She added lightly, “And, you know, if you really put your mind to it, you could definitely be the next Justin Bieber. Girls really go for that whole cute dorky thing you have going on there.” Sofi meant every word… Well, besides the part about Justin Bieber. She just couldn’t help herself with that one. He had talent and he’d go places. “Aw, that’s all I ask. Well, besides the fact that I demand I get to be your date to your first awards ceremony. Chicks will be all over you after you win and I’d love the chance to go to just one.”
She shrugged lightly, “Good. But not nearly as good as mine. As usual, I have the better taste.” Sof just laughed, “Not smart. Just striving to fit in with her overachieving family. Well, except Matt. But he was just so loveable you could excuse his slack. I’m so nervous about it all. Mostly because I’m putting it off, but still. It’s crazy. Did you decide not to take any?”
She flinched as his touch brought her out of her reverie, giving him a sad smile. “How is it that I found the best guy ever to have as my best friend? I’m undeserving. That sounds awesome. But I’m helping with breakfast. I can’t let you do everything for me. You’ll spoil me."
Sofi bit her bottom lip, thinking, “Hm, what is some odd, obscure club or activity we could make awesome? And don’t you be modest. I know you’re secretly epic. And you know it too, I think you just forget sometimes.”

Cody shook his head lightly, ”not at all, but friends should let friends treat them sometimes,” he gave a light shrug. ”especially when they insist,” he smiled, he really did enjoy doing random things for his friends, no matter how small. He was always that thoughtful and considerate friend, actually more so, he always put others before himself. His mother had told him on multiple occasions that he must have been the most selfless person in the planet but he took it as a compliment. Sure, at times there are people who take advantage of that, but Cody was pretty good at keepings his distance from those certain individuals.
Cody took ahold of his drink and took a sip, he couldn’t help but chuckle, ”very true, but promise not to bite hard?” He listened carefully to her next words and he couldn’t help but blush at her words. He really did want to make it, hell, if not for himself, at least for his mom. He wanted to get her a big house and make her more than proud of him. He chuckled a bit ”Justin Bieber, really?” he rose a brow, ”no thank you,” he laughed a bit ore. But he did appreciate the pep talk, Sofia was really good at those. Right when he was starting to lose hope, she had brought it back just as quickly. He blushed some more when the words ‘cute dorky’ left her mouth. Was that really what he gave off? He scratched his head a bit, well, he did have the whole glasses and indie style going on.
His smile widened at her final request, ”the first has to go to my mom, you know that. But I promise I’ll take you to more than one. Even though everyone would think you were way out of my league,” he laughed lightly. He shook his head at the fact that she said girls would be all over him, that was way too farfetched, at least he thought so. He never considered himself as someone who girls were interested in, he was always the friend, never the boyfriend. But he was okay with it for now; right now he was just living life and trying to follow his dreams. Love would come when it was meant to though, right? Cody blinked as he listened to her explain her AP choices; he shrugged a bit as he played with his straw. ”Well, just one, English… I’m not really the smartest in any other subject, plus I love writing,” he smiled. Sure, he might have given the impression that he was a bit of a nerd, but it didn’t mean he was a genius.
He blushed for what felt like the hundredth time in the last half hour, ”Aren’t you used to me spoiling you? Heh, my mom says the same thing though. Whenever I get home, I have to make sure she has everything she needs. She has to practically push me into my room so that I won’t cook the dinner,” he laughed lightly. It was true too; he always wanted to help out, especially when it came to his mom. She was a single mother trying to uphold a household all on her own, which was why he had gotten himself a job as soon as he could.
Cody had to make a mental note to give Sofia a hug before they went their separate way, she always knew just what to say and he truly loved her for that. ”Hmm… well I’m already in Glee, how about drama? I’m always so nervous, but I’d try it out if you did it with me,” he said with a light blush coming to his cheeks, “plus it would help with my stage fright,” he gave a light shrug.

Sofi rolled her eyes, laughing, “Okay, no need to argue. I’ll just have to pay you back when you least expect it now. Shouldn’t you know better than to try to insist with me?” The boy didn’t know when to give in. Especially seeing as she most certainly wouldn’t. As quiet as she could be, Sof didn’t really know when it was time to give in. You didn’t really learn to give in in her family.
“I’ll try not to be too violent.” She shook her head at how strange the remark would sound outside the conversation. In a conversation with anyone else, she’d be dying with how dorky she sounded. But Cody relaxed her, and she admittedly cared a lot less than usual as to what she was saying. “Eh, I don’t know, Cody. The similarities are endless. I mean, think of his lyrics. ‘Baby, baby, baby, oh’. That’s just soulful. Truly, I’m sure when you guys meet you’ll become besties.”
Sof threw up her hands in the sign of defeat, “You’re completely right. I almost forgot. Okay, second show. Just promise that first time you go and win, don’t promise any of the pretty girls who bat their eyes at you the next show. Because I claim that one. Hey, I’m the one who would be standing next to this amazing star musician. I can’t even compete.” She smirked at the boy across the table, her tone light and playful.
Sofi frowned, quietly thinking about it all. Thinking about classes made her think about graduating and that made her think about the inevitable future and that made her have a total breakdown. A major control freak, it drove Sofi crazy that she couldn’t just plan out her future. She couldn’t know what would happen. Shivering slightly, Sofi once again regained focus on the situation before her. It was too scary to think about. “Well, you don’t have to be the smartest to do well at something. But regardless, AP’s are overrated.”
Tossing her hair over her shoulder dramatically, Sofi gave a shocked gasp, “Used to being spoiled? That just doesn’t happen.” Giggling she reached over and shoved his shoulder lightly, “God you make the rest of us look bad with all your saintly deeds. Shouldn’t you be being a typical high school boy? All brooding and lazy and messy and all that fun, cliché stuff?”
His suggestion was definitely a good one. Before she’d gone through her little crazy stage, Sofi had dabbled with the whole theatre thing, even in musicals. She didn’t have any sort of amazing voice; she really didn’t think there was anything special about it. She’d been told the magic lay in the emotion that could be conveyed through it. And she’d enjoyed that feeling, the feeling of being able to share something with an audience. But since all the stupid drama, she’d been anxious about having people’s eyes on her, experiencing the whole stage fright thing for the first time. And it wasn’t enjoyable. But maybe she could do it…to help Cody at least.
“I think that would be an excellent addition to your resume, Monsieur Heart. Looks like we’ll be auditioning for fall show. How do you have stage fright though? You perform with Glee, don’t you? And it’s even easier when it’s just a play. You’re just saying the words of someone else, as someone else. It’s perfect.”

Cody’s smile never left his face, he held his hands up as if he was surrendering and chuckled, ”fine, fine… “. He couldn’t help but lend a helping hand or throw out a generous gesture here and there, it was almost as if he lived for that stuff. Making people smile was by far one of his favorite things to do in life, hell, a smile was worth a thousand words, right? His hands made their way back into his lap; he had a slight slouch in his posture, which was mainly because of his lack of confidence. He reached up and pushed his glasses up a bit, ”oh yeah, I can totally see me and Bieber becoming best friends… “ he said sarcastically, ”maybe he can teach me some dance movies, I pretty much suck in that department,” he admitted with a light laugh. ”and teach me how to do that hair flip thing he does, the girls seem to love that,” he made an attempt at the hair flip but failed miserably, laughing a little at how stupid he must have looked. Cody wasn’t comfortable with a lot of people, which was why people didn’t really see his more goofy side, but Sofia was one of the few that did.
”I promise,” he said as truthfully as he could, Cody was never one to really get girl crazy, even if a girl did throw themselves at him, not that that ever happened, but still. He liked wholesome girls, and he knew it’d probably be hard to find that girl if he did become famous. He didn’t want someone to date him because of his celebrity status, he wanted someone real, someone he could take home to Virginia and meet his mother and friends. He shook his head lightly at her words, he knew it wasn’t true. He knew that if he attended an award show with Sofia on his arm, people would be wondering how on earth he got her to come with him. Seeing a stunning girl that could possibly be a model next to some skinny nerdy musician? Ha, the people would have a ball with that one. ”well, either way, I’d love for you to come with me to as many as you want,” he said with a smile.
Cody gave a light nod, ”I guess you’re right, I mean I don’t have bad grades… I’m just not at the top of my class,” he shrugged a bit. ”but I’m not even sure if I’m going to go to college yet, so…” he shrugged again and took another sip of his beverage. It was true; he wasn’t planning on furthering his education. He laughed as he felt her nudge on his shoulder, ”why be like everyone else when I can just be me? Plus, you don’t get anywhere being messy and lazy. I have my mom to help out,” he said simply. He hated the fact that she had to raise him on her own and pay for everything by herself, she needed assistance and he was there to provide it.
Cody’s face turned a bit pink from embarrassment, ”I just do… I mean, in Glee I don’t perform alone, so there’s other people to watch, other people with… far more amazing voices… I just do back up stuff mostly… I don’t really have the courage to do a solo or just perform by myself in Glee… I start shaking and I don’t know… I just lose it a bit, he bit his lip. He hated admitting that he wasn’t confident in himself to perform alone, but it was true, every time someone tried to get him to get up and sing, he always fought a bit. Sure, he knew he had a voice, and he knew how to play the guitar, but he couldn’t help but get nervous and feel like everyone was just judging him. ”Well, it looks like we’ll be joining the drama club,” he smiled, ”I’ve never acted before, so this’ll be fun”.
